I-GO Poetry Slam

In our last newsletter we announced our first I-GO poetry contest for a chance to win driving credit and wear the virtual I-GO crown! The competition was tough, but in the end there was a clear winner. Congratulations Angela Bowan, you’ve won $25 in I-GO driving credit! Second place and a $15 driving credit goes to Amy Weik. Finishing in 3rd is Hazel Domangue who will receive $10 in driving credit. Honorable mention goes to Victoria Cichy for her “bad I-GO haiku” (her words not ours), but we’re awarding her $5 in driving credit because we like her spunk! Here’s the winning entry.

Answer is plain and bright green

by Angela Bowan
In the UK, our car remained
parked outside the window
in sunshine or rain
We passed it regularly
as we ran for the bus or the train:
When we moved to Chicago,
we thought it would be the same
But the trains took forever
and the buses never came
Wanting only one car
but stuck with a dilemma
how do two people work full time
whilst delivering kids to activities 1-9
We discovered the answer
written plain and bright green
No need for extra parking,
extra insurance or parking fees
Join I-GO, satisfy everyone with ease

Neighborhood News

Logan Square

Information provided by I-GO Member Stephanie Piekos. Photos provided by Deb Ackles.

Some great Logan Square spots:

Golden Rise Bakery @ Sacramento + Diversey - serving up tasty pastries, coffee drinks, breakfast and lunch specials and last but not least their yummy organic bread.

Lula Cafe @ Kedzie + Boulevard - everyone by now probably knows how amazing Lula’s is, they are small and local, serving the best seasonal and inventive meals, with both inexpensive sandwich options and gourmet dinner specials. It is my absolute favorite restaurant for any meal, in Chicago.

The Dill Pickle Food Co-op, a member-owned grocery, is opening this fall at 3039 W. Fullerton, across from the library. This has been my most anticipated new addition to the neighborhood. The Dill Pickle is open to everyone, but membership allows you to have a voice in the administration of the co-op. The co-op is committed to local, organic and healthy food, and they will focus on quality and affordability, not corporate profits.

Logan Theater on Milwaukee - It’s great when you can walk to a local movie house, which opened in 1915, and see a cheap 2nd-run feature for a few bucks, after a great meal at Lula’s.

Just Vintage on California - cute shop for various vintage and gently used newer items, clothing, accessories, small furniture and clever knick-knacks. I always find something here for a good price.

Threads on Milwaukee - This is a large, 2-story store featuring used clothing and accessories, but the main draw is the large mix of weird, antique, and almost-new furniture. You can find some amazing pieces here among the 70s and 80s cast-offs, and may be able to arrange for local delivery from the owner.

Palmer Square Park - recently given to the city, is currently being renovated to include a ‘velveteen rabbit’ play area for kids in the middle of this long, shady boulevard parkway.

Logan Square Boulevard - I love this greenspace, when walking around and looking at the old facades of great mansions, and in summer there is a thriving Farmer’s Market near Kedzie, and a local House + Garden walk.

Fireside Bowl on Fullerton - I’ve only been here for rock shows back in their heyday, but it’s great to have a local option if bowling is your thing.

Post Office @ California + Fullerton - no matter how you might feel about the service, this building is a lasting relic of Art Deco era architecture and I wish they would restore it. It always makes me smile when I walk by, because I can appreciate the design.

Of course there are the nearby big box stores, and a Gap outlet. There’s a nice new library and Stellaria Natural Health is hidden on a 2nd floor on California, selling herbs and offering yoga classes and naturopath doctor for all your aches and pains. I just saw a concert at the “mansion” on Kedzie, a great old ballroom for smaller shows. There are 3 Blue line El stops at California and Logan and Belmont and a great Asian Food superstore on N. Kimball.
